Ibn Battuta 2023

Over a period of thirty years from 1325 to 1354, the Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta travelled over 115,000 km across Africa, Asia and the Middle East, making him the most travelled explorer in pre-modern history.. Near the end of his life, he dictated an account of his journeys. The story of Ibn Battuta was dramatically reimagined in 2023 for the iconic Al Wasl Dome in Dubai, the world’s largest interactive, immersive space.

Artists in Motion produced the 10-minute show, commissioning Totem to create the title sequence and several other key scenes. We worked with AIM’s artistic directors, using a detailed animated 3D character to represent the intrepid explorer. The base animation was produced by AIM; Totem then integrated the asset into various scenes, along with camel trains, desert dunes and swirling dust storms, lighting and rendering at 8K to recapture the drama of the voyage.
